I loved reading this story, it goes to show how history has been so muddled to suit
The fact that Moari tribes attacked one another, the fact that the aggressors were not all English and the colonisers, that Russia ever visited here is a revelation
Interesting tale and it would be gd to see a documentary done on these artefacts. On a side note, at some time in the later 1800s there was a "Russian scare" so much so that the "disappearing gun" on Aucklands Nth head was installed to guard against the Russian "enemy". A newspaper put out that a Russian war ship called the
"kaiskowiski" was coming to Auckland which sent the populace into a flap at the time. Later turned out to be a hoax and the paper said they were misquoted, they really ment a" case of whisky" was being brought in!
They'll be wanting them back, maybe send a crew over to investigate, or at the very least blessed and made a big song and dance about.. aw come on you know its true, bless them all
A good article and nice to know the Russians got those artefacts by genuine means and civility.
Maybe Maori now, will honour that and just bestow a blessing on them.
thanks for this piece of NZ history.
